Paperbacks, Penguins and Services Editions: Books for the British Soldier in the Second World War
by Stephen R Thompson

Stephen Thompson’s interest in the Services Editions of the Second World War was sparked off by buying a paperback copy of Robert Gibbings’s Sweet Thames Run Softly.
This particular edition was issued in 1944 as a Services Editions paperback under the Guild Books imprint. This set him off collecting and researching the Services Editions designed to boost the morale of British servicemen far from home.
Some of the efforts were worthy rather inspired, as he discovered and as he sets out in his article.
