A Brand New Website
Work began in October 2019 to redesign the PLA website and make it look younger and fresher, while not getting too overwhelmed with internet bells and whistles.
Like all websites, rather than a finished product we have now at least stepped out on the road of evolution — with changes, additions and tweaks to arrive in the coming months. But for our first steps into a Brave New World, we think it's a good start and we hope to keep on improving and refining throughout the year.
Update 2025: the new PLA website was a bit neglected from 2022/3, but is now being updated in terms of structure and content. Do please let me know if you have any ideas for further improvement. You can contact me HERE

AI & Old Documents Most of us at one time or another have spent hours transcribing an old document. AI can, for sure, make the task much quicker and easier. Here is a random document (ie nothing special) on sheepskin parchment concerning some land in Piddington in Oxfordshire, dated 14th March 1783. The creases are a bit of a bind, and the ink is faded... It would for sure take an hour or two to puzzle out the words and write them down. An AI tool was given this same photograph (nothing more whatsoever), and within less than a minute offered the notes and transcription below. I give it in full along with the AI note to show what is now possible.
Spencer Stuart: an update Members will remember that in early May 2026, Spencer Stuart spoke to us on Zoom about the book-related services he offers, and later in May there was a follow-up in-person meeting at Bryars & Bryars (in Cecil Court, London) by kind invitation of Tim Bryars. Spencer sums up his approach: "From examining the technological and economic changes to the book trade and auction arena, and comparing with the current experience for collectors actively building their libraries, I can demonstrate that the passion for collecting is alive and well, but (more than a quarter of the way into the Century) traditional models for developing collections, both privately and institutionally, are no longer common practice. These changes have impacted emerging collectors concerning how they set out and define their collecting focus, as well as mature collectors looking to plan the future of their existing collections. In my writings, I explore many topics that are current in the Wold of Collecting, and I invite you to stay in touch with current developments, and contact me directly with any inquiries about how I might help you with any aspects of your collection.
