Private Library Autumn 2023
published March 2026
The David Chambers Memorial issue

   PL editor, David Butcher writes:

"David Chambers joined the PLA in 1958 as member 194 and quickly became a member of Council, co-editor of the then annual Private Press Books , assistant editior of The Private Library (and later editor from 1979 to 2016), publications secretary, designer, editor, and author of PLA publications, and from 1966 chairman of the Council, a post he held for 50 years until 2017.

"This issue brings together childhood and later memories of David as a father and mentor by his children, Peter, Clare, and Susan, followed by an obituary by Paul Nash giving an overview of his career and involvement with the PLA and other book and printing related organisations.

"There is a reprint of the very first article he wrote for the PL (1961), and also a survey of the works he printed at his Cuckoo Hill Press. Finally, there is a consideration of David Chambers' work as designer, writer, and editor of the PL for almost 40 years."
